Mushroom testing and compliance
Why mushroom supplement testing matters more than ever
The mushroom supplement market is experiencing remarkable growth. The UK market alone is worth £1 billion and is expected to double by 2030. This expansion reflects genuine consumer interest in the potential health benefits of medicinal mushrooms, from cognitive support with Lion's Mane to immune health with Reishi.
With this growth comes an important opportunity: helping companies and brands understand and deliver quality supplements.
Understanding what makes a quality mushroom supplement
Mushroom supplements are thought to work because of their specific bioactive compounds, beta-glucans, polysaccharides, ergosterol. These molecules give mushrooms their functional properties. But concentration and quality can vary depending on species, growing conditions, extraction methods, and processing.
This natural variation means testing isn't just about compliance, it's about understanding a company’s product.
The opportunity for quality-focused brands
As consumers become more educated, they're asking better questions:
• Which species is in this product?
• How much beta-glucan does it contain?
• Is it fruiting body or mycelium?
• Has it been tested for contaminants?
Brands that can answer these questions confidently have a significant advantage. Quality testing is a differentiator.
Comprehensive mushroom testing at ADACT Medical
Identity confirmation: We use High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) to create a unique chromatographic 'fingerprint' confirming the species. We test Lion's Mane, Reishi, Cordyceps, Shiitake, Maitake, Chaga, and Turkey Tail.
Potency analysis: Using Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS), we quantify species-specific biomarkers. This tells you how much of the active compounds your product contains, valuable for formulation consistency, batch-to-batch quality control, and product development.
Beta-glucans quantification: Beta-glucans are key bioactive compounds that support cardiovascular health, immune function, gut health, and blood sugar regulation. All mushrooms contain them, but concentrations vary. We can tell you exactly how much is in your product.
Beta-glucans from mushrooms have a more complex structure than those from grains, giving them greater biological activity.
Safety and purity: We test for heavy metals (lead, mercury, arsenic), pesticides, microbiology, and stability over shelf-life. This comprehensive screening is vital and essential for supplement brands.
Our technology
We use best-in-class analytical equipment in our UK laboratory:
HPTLC for species identification
LC-MS for potency assessment
HPLC for accurate quantification.
Our UK-based team specialises in mushroom analysis, bringing expert knowledge to every test.
Why testing supports brand growth
Comprehensive testing helps brands:
Build consumer trust: Transparent testing demonstrates commitment to quality and builds loyalty.
Ensure consistency: Batch-to-batch testing ensures products deliver consistent quality.
Support product development: Understanding bioactive profiles helps optimise formulations.
Meet retailer requirements: Major retailers increasingly require comprehensive testing data.
Communicate with confidence: When you know exactly what's in your products, marketing becomes easier.
Specialist expertise
Our Chief Regulatory Officer and Senior Management Team have authored peer-reviewed research on supplements and mushroom supplements. We understand the differences between mushroom species, how processing affects bioactive compounds, and how to interpret analytical data meaningfully.
Quick turnaround
At ADACT Medical we typically deliver results in 5-10 working days with detailed, transparent reporting that's easy to understand and use.
Supporting quality mushroom supplements
The research into medicinal mushrooms is genuinely exciting. From cognitive support to immune health, the potential is significant and increasingly well-documented. More clinical research is now needed.
As the market grows, quality testing helps ensure consumer interest is met with products that deliver. It's how the industry matures and trust is built.
Whether you're formulating a new product, scaling production, or looking to differentiate in a crowded market, comprehensive testing provides the foundation for quality and confidence.
