The results are pooled and validated to ensure consistency across the three samples, using standard deviations. Synthetic nicotine is not derived from tobacco. It is made in a laboratory, hence, it is also known as tobacco-free nicotine. Synthetic nicotine has the same chemical structure (C10 H14 N2) as nicotine from tobacco. The nicotine molecule has two isomers or mirror images of each other: (-)Levorotary or L-nicotine and (+) Dextrorotary of D-nicotine.

Tobacco derived nicotine contains (-) L-nicotine, the only isomer that has an effect in the human brain. Synthetic nicotine contain equal concentrations of (-)L and (+)D-nicotine.
